In the past 15 years, Israeli documentary filmmakers have turned a marginal medium at the service of the state, into a powerful tool for public discourse. Praised internationally for their artistic values and moral standpoint, these films express political, cultural and social issues at the core of Israeli society.

What does the image of this society which is reflected in these films, and how does it differ from the image which we know from the main-stream media?

This course offers an in-depth study of Israeli documentaries that exposes students to new perspectives on Israeli society, its culture, history, political narrative, and conflicts.

This course satisfies a Jewish Studies Elective requirement and a Cross Cultural (CC) General Education requirement.

Duki Dror - Resident Artist at UCSC

Dror Film StillEducated at UCLA and in Columbia College Chicago, Duki Dror is one of the most prolific documentary filmmakers in Israel. Among his award-winning documentaries: My Fantasia - tells the story of his father who was a political prisoner in Iraq; Raging Dove - the story of Palestinian-Israeli world boxing champion Johar Abu-Lashin; The Journey of Vaan Nguyen - a documentary about Vietnamese "boat people" in Israel.

Dror will present and discuss some of his works during the course.
